Acacia is a medium size centre (64 places) situated in the Attorney General’s building that has created a strong sense of ‘community’ with the children and families that attend the centre. This has been created by having a shared outdoor learning space for all children of the service as well as a shared dining area which is the central hub of the centre – it is used for all meals, group and community events, and simply as a place to meet and talk.
Acacia recently initiated an audit to review how the centre can improve its sustainability practices, and planned and created a mud kitchen in the outdoor yard for the children to explore and learn from (which was very well received by the children). Acacia has been working with the Canberra environment centre in a three year initiative to establish and maintain vegetable and herb gardens. The children have been very involved in this project taking part in a program called ‘ grow together’ where they learn about gardening, healthy foods and sustainable practices. This year the children of Acacia were even able to take this a step further by selling some of their produce by setting up a small stall out the front of the centre. The money raised from this was then used to buy new seeds and resources to continue to add to their garden’s growth.
Acacia have embedded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into their everyday curriculum. Educators have received training on the provision of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander appropriate pedagogy, and an Aboriginal Elder visits our Birralee service and Acacia once a month to talk with the children about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history through music, dance and storytelling.
The waiting list has a priority of access to the Attorney General’s Department but can also take non-Departmental applications. The Centre operates 51 weeks of the year and provides a high quality educational program. The educators at Acacia are committed to nurturing and supporting the individual needs and values of each child and their family.
