On Sunday 10 May 2020 Community Services #1 will be launching the Kindness Matters project. This new initiative seeks to create community connection and spread joy throughout Canberra and beyond. Research shows that performing acts of kindness can improve feelings of happiness, improve mental wellbeing and relationships.
Each week we will be sharing a suggested act of kindness idea on our website and Facebook and Instagram. We invite participants to share their deeds and see what others are doing by using the hashtag #kindnessmatters.
Studies have proven that compassionate giving and benevolence are not only great for the recipient, but the giver as well. We feel happier when we perform acts of kindness and doing random acts of kindness also improves our mental health.
There are many physiological benefits of kindness including a strengthened immune system, improved cognitive performance, an increase in energy, lowered heart rate and balanced cortisol levels which result in less internal stress.
“During such a trying and isolating time as COVID-19, we need to continue to connect with others in our community and we thought that acts of kindness would be the perfect start. Everyone is weathering this together so this is a way we can remain connected but at a safe distance,” Community Services #1 Wellness and Social Groups Coordinator Derryth Nash said.
“Not only are we wanting to connect those in our community, but there are also so many positive health benefits to being kind, and it just feels good to do something positive!”
Kindness Matters is open to anyone in our community – it may be something for staff teams, clients of community services, neighbours, families or friends.
We hope you will participate and help us spread kindness within our community!
